East Clifton Lagoons
Runcorn, Cheshire
Landcare acquired this 21 hectare site from ICI in March 2008. It is situated between the River Weaver and the Weaver Navigation Canal on the outskirts of Frodsham in Cheshire. It is a roughly rectangular site with the M56 motorway and the Chester to Manchester railway line forming the other sides of the rectangle. East Clifton was a former landfill site for predominantly calcium sulphate and calcium hydroxide solids that resulted from neutralization processes within the Runcorn chemical complex.
The site is typical of a number of former landfill sites in that it still requires operational and environmental management and analytical support, even though the waste streams ceased to enter the site many years ago. Following capping by Landcare the site will ultimately form part of the high profile Weaver Valley Gateway Leisure project with Landcare working closely with Cheshire West & Chester Council to create a network of footpaths, bridleways and cycleways at the gateway to the Weaver Valley.
