Furey Landfill
Northwich, Cheshire
Furey landfill sits on the banks of the River Weaver within walking distance of Northwich Town Centre in Cheshire. The site has a long history associated with the Cheshire chemical industry, and forms a former lime waste lagoon complex, with tipping having finally ceased in the 1970’s. Landcare agreed to take over the freehold ownership of the site along with day to day responsibility for restoration, maintenance, management and security. A redundant site which had played a major role in the industrialisation of the area was in the view of Landcare, ideally suited to take on a new role as a key public amenity for future generations to enjoy.
Phase 1 of the restoration and opening of public access was completed and culminated in the agreement of a ‘surface lease’ with the local authority. A community woodland and riverside walk has proved so popular with local residents that Landcare is now progressing Phase 2 of the open access plan. Ultimately this will deliver the restoration of the remainder of the site, utilising cross funding from enabling development. The park forms an integral part of the local authority ‘Northwich Vision’ and Landcare’s ability to balance the site’s technical requirements alongside the desire for public access, is clearly demonstrated on this unique project.
