Hillhouse Landfill
Fleetwood, Lancashire
Landcare took ownership and environmental responsibility for the 110 acre Hillhouse landfill and lagoon complex near Fleetwood, Lancashire. Working closely with the Environment Agency, the extant Waste Management Licence was transferred, thus enabling a complete exit for the client both from liability and day to day operational responsibility. The site was formerly used as an acid waste treatment facility and general industrial landfill, with an operational history spanning some 60 years. The site however did not conform to modern day landfill engineering standards and therefore was required to be closed, and a restoration scheme designed.
Through a rigorous process of risk assessment and strategic planning, Landcare has secured one of the UK’s first and largest ‘Waste Recovery Permits’ for the site. The process is designed to enable waste materials to be used in place of virgin materials for the capping and restoration of the site, thus creating a sustainable solution to a problematic site. Testing is also advanced for trial use of ‘Organic Growth Medium’ from the neighbouring Waste Technology Park at Thornton to be used in the restoration process. Full planning permission has been granted by Lancashire County Council for the creation of a Country Park with a clear focus on the creation of sustainable wildlife habitats, over a 10 to 15 year period.
