Leggar Landfill

Bridgwater, Somerset

Chemical giants Akzo Nobel came to Landcare in seeking a secure exit from a former landfill site in Bridgwater, Somerset. Landcare are pleased to announce they have taken ownership and day to day responsibility for the former cellophane landfill at the Leggar in Bridgwater, including past, present and future liability.

The circa 5 acre site was formerly a brick manufacturing facility and was infilled over a period of time from the 1930’s through to 1969 when tipping ceased. The surrounding land has been extensively developed, leaving this an orphan site until now. Bespoke legal agreements were emplaced to effect the seamless transfer including deeds of warranty from the client’s environmental advisors.

Landcare were advised by Squire, Sanders Dempsey (UK) LLP’ s Partner, Mark Gaffney, who has helped Landcare secure a number of similar transactions.

Simon Towers, Landcare’s Managing Director stated ‘we are delighted to have delivered a clean exit for a new and valued client and now have a presence in the South West of England from which to grow further and are already appraising further opportunities in the region’.

Immediately following completion, Landcare’s dedicated maintenance team have been on to site and fully secured the site, erected signage and undertaken a cut back of vegetation. Landcare are seeking to work closely with the Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset County Council and adjacent landowners to dedicate part of the site for a much needed new road link, funded through enabling development, and to restore part of the site for long term public open space.
