Landcare through a special purpose vehicle, Ulverston Canal Company Ltd, has taken ownership and day to day responsibility from its client Glaxo SmithKline, of the historic Ulverston Canal in Cumbria. GSK had owned and managed the canal for over 35 years, but as part of a business review, ownership of the canal was deemed surplus to requirements and hence a secure exit was sought.
Safeguarding the long term existence, maintenance and operation of the canal was at the forefront of the divestment plan and the reasoning behind the reliance on Landcare to provide the solution.
UCC has set up a dedicated Canal Steering Group, working in partnership with Ulverston Town Council, South Lakes District Council and local residents of Ulverston to ensure the long term future of the canal and to look at enhancement opportunities.
The canal is the focus of a wider town masterplan which it is hoped will deliver a comprehensive mixed use development at Canal Head, linking it to the Town Centre, creating employment, living, shopping, recreational and tourism opportunities.
