Landcare extends coverage in South Yorkshire with the acquisition of the former Laporte landfill in Rotherham
Landcare has provided another managed exit this time for the UK division of German industrial giants Evonik Degussa UK Holdings Limited, from the former Laporte landfill site at Ginhouse Lane, Rotherham for an undisclosed sum reflecting the liability transfer to Landcare.
Comprising of approximately 20 acres, the former industrial landfill is bounded by a public footpath, an operational railway line and a large industrial manufacturing site in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
The site history is complex, commencing with clay extraction and quarrying in the late 1920’s through to the 1950’s when landfilling was reported to commence. In the mid 1960’s the site was acquired by Laporte who eventually developed the landfill for the acceptance of slurried gypsum containing sulphuric acid as a by product of the adjacent industrial process.
Tipping ceased in early 2000 and the adjacent manufacturing site was sold to a third party, with the landfill remaining as a long term liability. Ownership passed to Evonik in 2005, following which the landfill was comprehensively capped and restored and entered the post closure monitoring and management regime.
With a desire to securely divest its former UK liabilities, Evonik approached Landcare for a solution. Bespoke legal transfer documents were put in place which included a full environmental insurance risk policy to enable the transfer of the site to Landcare for an undisclosed sum payable by Evonik to reflect the full liability divestment. Following the successful transfer of the environmental permit to Landcare, the transaction was completed.
Landcare with its national specialist landfill maintenance and monitoring team will continue to manage the site through to eventual permit surrender.
Landcare was advised by Squire Sanders (UK) LLP, Geosyntec Consultants and Edia Environmental Insurance Limited.
