Landcare extends its UK coverage into South Wales
Landcare has provided another managed exit this time for Springfield Environmental Ltd, part of the Taylor Wimpey group, from the former Stormy West landfill site near Bridgend, South Wales for an undisclosed sum reflecting the liability transfer to Landcare.
The majority of the site in question comprises a former limestone quarry filled with industrial and domestic wastes between 1986 and 1996. The site originally had a waste disposal licence granted under COPA 1974 which had been modified to an Environmental Permit. Under the terms of the acquisition, a full permit transfer has been undertaken to Landcare thus providing a full and secure exit for the client.
The site continues to produce gas in non-commercial quantities and a gas collection system is in place with a pump and flare unit installed in a small compound within the premises. The site will be managed by Landcare’s specialist closed landfill team, with environmental monitoring coming under the remit of NPL group’s specialist environmental monitoring business RegenIQ.
Part of the site was not affected by the waste infill and planning consent and a waste management licence was obtained for the construction and use of a waste transfer station which operated until 2005 when this land was restored.
Landcare’s Managing Director Roger Warren said “whilst only a relatively small site at 30 acres, nevertheless it represents the first step of our growth plans in South Wales which will lead to the development of a regional office over the next 12 months as further planned acquisitions are completed. We are delighted to have provided a valuable service to retained clients, Taylor Wimpey group and look forward to working with them to provide solutions on other sites’.”
The prognosis for Stormy West is one of continued environmental monitoring alongside feasibility assessments for the development of a solar farm utilising the electricity grid connections on site.
