Transfer of former cellophane landfill at Puriton in Somerset
Following the successful acquisition of the Leggar Site in Bridgewater in June 2012, Landcare has expanded its presence in the South West of England following the completion of legal agreements to take ownership and responsibility for Puriton Landfill.
Comprising of some 22 hectares of land adjacent to the M5 motorway, south of Bridgwater in Somerset, the landfill was operated by the previous owner from 1973 through to 1996. The site accepted some 120,000 cubic metres of wet cellophane and assorted factory wastes and was deemed to be a closed site at time of transfer to Landcare.
The site sits on the Somerset Levels which are drained by artificial dykes or rhynes, and Landcare’s initial aim is to stabilise the site and undertake trials in agreement with the Environment Agency for the cessation of leachate pumping, having demonstrated the improved quality of the pumped liquid. If successful, water draining from the site is hoped to be suitable for direct discharge to the Walpole Rhyne.
The site requires to be restored and brought back into beneficial use, and Landcare is working closely with Somerset County Council to promote a restoration which will see the importation of soil materials to create a free draining landform, with planting with bio energy crops ensuring a productive future for the site.
Landcare’s Managing Director, Roger Warren said, “whilst only a relatively small site, it does increase our presence in the region, and we wanted to provide a secure managed exit for one of our key clients. The innovative future use of the sites as part of the UK’s increasing energy mix is something that Landcare is pioneering on a number of sites within our portfolio, bringing redundant sites back into beneficial use.”
